Theater We’re Excited For

The theater is back, and we are oh so ready.
Here is a look into what we are looking forward to seeing this year, and how we see it for CHEAP.

By Mickey Galvin and Sterling Gates

WHY GO?

Michael R. Jackson’s meta-musical depicting “a queer, black writer, writing a musical about a queer, black, writer” is now a Pulitzer Prize-winner, in addition to being the most Tony-nominated show of the season. The show was all the buzz off-Broadway pre-pandemic and is now receiving its well-deserved Broadway debut.

WHY GO?

We would see anything Soho Rep puts on! This downtown theater has their finger on a certain pulse of creative energy that is innovative and exciting. Described as “a drag show about decolonizing places and people,” you can expect a classic cozy-but-edgy downtown theater experience.

WHY GO?

Sam Gold directs this intimate play about “a woman with Down syndrome named Ginny and her half-brother Christopher unmoored in the wake of their mother's death.” The play stars experimental theater hottie Deirdre O’Connell. This woman can do anything, and your eyes will be glued to her the minute she walks onstage. We will see anything with Deirdre O’Connell, and you should too.

WHY GO?

The Park Avenue Armory is a special place to see theater. Its massive amount of space attracts European directors and allows them to play. The productions will be performed in repertory by the same cast this summer.

Three Sisters (Adapted by Clare Barron)
TBA (2022/2023 Season)
NYTW

WHY GO?

Directed by Tony winning Sam Gold, this Checkov adaptation will (hopefully) be the star of the downtown season. Greta Gerwig, Oscar Isaac, Lola Kirke, and Steve Buscemi are all signed onto the project. Writer Clare Barron is best known for her 2018 play Dance Nation, which depicted grown adults playing the young girls of a suburban dance troupe. Getting a ticket to this play will be an Olympic sport. Think Pen 15 meets Checkov meets the Lower East Side.

HOW TO RUSH/PRICE

At the first two performances of every NYTW production, every seat is available for just $25. OR If you’re under 25, over 65, an artist, or a resident of the East Village and Lower East Side, you can snag a $25 seat via our CheapTix Rush at any performance.
